3 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour
Marrakech to the Sahara, in three days
This is our shortest desert loop, and the one most people choose when time is tight: two nights on the road, a mountain pass, a fortified kasbah, a gorge, and a night under the stars in the dunes near Merzouga. You'll cross the High Atlas twice, ride camels into the Sahara at sunset, and sleep in a nomadic tent before heading back to Marrakech through the old market town of Rissani.
Over the High Atlas to the Valley of Roses
After breakfast, we leave your riad or hotel and head south, crossing the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres. We stop at the Telouet and Ait Ben Haddou kasbahs, then continue through the Valley of Roses to reach the Todra Gorges by evening. Dinner and overnight at a hotel.
Into the Sahara by camel
After breakfast, we head toward Merzouga, passing the Todra palmeraie and Erfoud, the city of fossils. In the afternoon, we leave the vehicle behind and ride camels for around ninety minutes to two hours into the great dunes of Erg Chebbi. Dinner and overnight in a nomadic desert camp, with the stars, the sunset, and sunrise over the sand.
Rissani market and the return to Marrakech
We ride back to the auberge by camel for a hot shower before continuing on. Along the way, we stop at the exotic market of Rissani, once Morocco's first imperial city and the largest market in the south, then follow the Draa Valley to visit the Tamnougalt kasbah. We cross the High Atlas again to reach Marrakech in the evening.
