6 day Fes to Marrakech Sahara trip, via Merzouga
An extra day around the dunes
This is our 5-day Fes route with one more day built in around Merzouga, giving you a full circuit of the dunes, two oases, a mining village, and a visit with Berber nomads, before the camel ride out to camp for the night. From there, the route follows the same path west through Todra and Dades Gorges, the Valley of Roses, and Ait Ben Haddou, finishing with an airport transfer from Marrakech.
Cedar forests, the apple capital, and the Ziz Valley
After breakfast, we leave for Merzouga via Ifrane, often described as Morocco's "Swiss-style" city, and its cedar forests, where we stop to watch the local macaques. Lunch is in Midelt, known as the apple capital, at the foot of Jbel Ayachi. We continue over the Tizi n'Talghamt pass and through the Ziz Valley, known for its palm trees and wide oasis, passing countless ksour, or fortified villages, on the way to Er Rachidia and then Erfoud, known for its date and fossil festival. We arrive in Merzouga in time to watch the sunset over the dunes. Overnight at a desert hotel.
Oases, a mining village, and Berber nomads
After breakfast, a full day touring the dunes: two Merzouga oases, a nomadic settlement, the mines around the village of Mifis, and the desert plateau to meet Berber nomads near the Tissardmine oasis. Back at the lodge around 3pm, we set off by camel to watch the sunset over the dunes (around ninety minutes each way). Overnight in a private tent, under a full sky of stars.
Sunrise, fossils, and the Todra Gorge
An early start to watch the sunrise over the dunes by camel, back to the camp for breakfast and a shower. We stop in Rissani and Erfoud to visit a fossil marble workshop, then continue past the palmeraies of Tourog and Tinjdad, arriving at the Todra Gorge for lunch. In the afternoon, we continue through the Dades Gorge toward Boumalne. Dinner and overnight at a hotel.
The Valley of Roses and the Skoura oasis
After breakfast, we hike part of the Dades Gorge and take a side track to see cave dwellings once used by nomadic families. We continue through El Kelaa M'Gouna, the Valley of Roses, and the Skoura oasis, with overnight accommodation in Ouarzazate.
The kasbahs, and over the Tizi n'Tichka to Marrakech
After breakfast, we visit Kasbah Taourirt before heading to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We continue to Telouet, a traditional High Atlas Berber village, and visit the Glaoui Kasbah, with lunch at a local restaurant. We finish by crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass to reach Marrakech.
